all once again, just hearsay, what exactly have the principal and AD done? I don't know specifics, but I do know that faculty and community ppl were growing tired of her antics and attitude. Like I previously stated, unless you were a supporter of her, then she did not get along with many others.
There is more to coaching than just wins and losses like someone previously stated. I know that during her tenure, some of her team acted above the rules (as well as herself) and it grew old and tiresome to a lot of people. as far as the coaching aspect, she had talent period, those girls were going to be successful regardless who the coach was. but just my opinion on all this, Im just an observant
Who ever the new coach is, will do just fine and have success also. any word on who the new coach will be?

Yes fan4life any coach should win with these girls but who developed their talent, Coach Shumate did. Did she not start an AAU team while Randy was still at North? If working the girls hard is a bad thing, why is Central and West copying what she has done. East has had an AAU program but would let anyone play. I have heard bad things about North from other schools because of what the Joines and Berens have done. Shame on North administration and shame on Hemric and school board for not stopping it

Randy Joines (or any other coach) would win with the group of girls that North Wilkes has had the last few years. If memory serves me correctly Wendy Shumate didn't win a single game her first year. Not until Jackie Denny was a freshman did they start winning....not a coincidence. Good luck to North girls. They have a lot of talent, they will be fine.

We all can speculate things here. I'm wandering why hasn't any parents called the board or the news or put anything in the paper? That would start the ball rolling toward the truth. I can say, I know Wendy. She's an active member in her church, a good lady, a good mom, a good coach and a good nurse practitioner. She came from this district and she cares about the health of the people in this district and gave back to this district by giving her spare time to build the youth that wanted to learn basketball. Something she herself was pretty good at in school. Something that help shape her life with focus, drive, teamwork and self worth. Say what you want, but how many of us can say the same about ourselves or the principal or even someone else. Prayers for the coach. Prayers for the students.

It never ceases to amaze me the way that people, parents especially, expect coaches not to focus so much on wins but the experience they gain but then when someone is let go they immediately defend them with wins and losses or lack there of. There are so many things that coaches are responsible for that no one ever sees, such as dealing with off the field/court behavior issues, grades, eligibility, private conversations with the team and/or participants, academics, the list goes on and on. I have no inside info into the situation but I know that it is not as easy as a parent complaining to get rid of a coach. Like another poster said, if that was the case, there would not be a single high school coach around. You could go undefeated and win every championship available and someone would still feel like their child got a raw deal. It will be interesting how many specific details come out.

although it does appear like the Principal has an agenda, i doubt that is the actual case, If they tried to hire the old coach back. I could see and understand an uproar from parents etc..

Hide and watch, the principal will have her husband back in the district and coaching girls b-ball at her school either this year or the next. That's just the school's communistic way.
Pray for the coach. Pray for the students.

Yep! Are you sure she had a chance to defend herself. Are you sure there is more to it? Or is that your opinion? No listen close. I'll say it for the second time. I'm not angry. Just amused. :)

never said she was a bad coach, she did what she was suppose to with the talent, but w/o question the previous coach did not have a Denny, church, Wyatt etc... Now to the angered mama, do we know for a fact that she was accused and let go without a chance to defend herself? or is that just your opinion? Im pretty sure she had a chance to explain herself and Im sure their is more to it than just an angered parent that got her dismissed, it takes common sense to figure that out. If a coach got let go for every mad parent then there wuld not be any coaches left in the world. Like I previously said and will say for a 3rd time, Im sure there is more to it and letting her go was justified, Im guessing we will know more soon.

Commish you are right, she did have talent. But let me take you back to the days before Coach Shumate arrived. They had one of the worst programs in the state. They had several winless seasons. Do you think it was a coincidence that the principal's husband was the coach during this time? Coach Shumate was hired to take his place. One reason she has talent is that she works hard to get the girls in the North district to play and takes the time to work with them.

Who's angry? :) Sorry but you failed to mention this part. "Oh, so she deserved to be accused, tried, and convicted without being able to defend herself?" Have a good night.

Im referring to coaches, parents and people within the school and community, aside from her selected people, she was hard to get along with.. read more carefully before you post with anger. Like previously stated, there is more to it I am sure, and in time Im sure we will hear more details...

Oh, so she deserved to be accused, tried, and convicted without being able to defend herself? Tyrant? How about passionate. Hard to get along ? Wasn't popular with coaches and parents from other teams? Heck, I wouldn't like her either if I pulled for a team that had been beating North with ease for years. Now they are beating me on a regular basis.

Shumate may have deserved what she got. A good coach? sure, but also had talent to play with, a Tyrant? and hard to get along with? absolutely. wasn't very popular with other coaches and parents that were not in her contingent. Also Im sure there is a lot more to the story than we all know and speculate...more to come I bet.

These principals have too much power that goes to their heads with no oversite from the school board. In 1990 i asked two principals I saw in a grocery store, Why don't you teach the students something that will benefit them when they get out of school, like how to make money. One answered and the other agreed. She said "to show students how to make more money then us would be ridiculous". I lost faith in the system that day. I have seen first hand how some of these power hungry principals walk around looking down their noses at concerns of parents. With their better than thou attitude pushing their own communistic dictatorship agendas. My own children are in the school system here, and it scares me when stuff like this comes up. the board only backs the principal and the longer they can keep it under the rug the less they have to do to show why they're on the board. I hope the truth will come out about this scandal. Praying for the coach.

I'm hearing that a parent of a player made an accusation against North's basketball coach. She was accused, tried and sentenced. She was never given a chance to defend herself even though she had a witness to refute that parent's claim. Also, the new AD was overheard last year stating that if he was in charge he would get rid of Shumate! Looks like he succeeded.
